Documentation stages

Between the 17th and 29th of November 2012, Dr Luminița Bejenaru conducted a research stage at the National Museum of Natural History – UMR 7209 in Paris, where she engaged in active discussions with Dr Christine Lefevre, a specialist in the field of cultural and ecological interactions between man and the natural communities, on the topic of bird representations and their religious significance for the Cucuteni-Tripolye culture. Likewise, she discussed with Dr Jean-Denis Vigne, director of UMR 7209, on issues of cultural anthropology and historical biogeography, such as avian and feline representations and their significance in various Neolithic contexts. Dr L. Bejenaru and Dr D. Monah analysed with various archaeozoology specialists from UMR 7209 certain zoomorphic representations of the Cucuteni-Tripolye culture, the discussions mainly addressing the question of species identification and particularly the possible analogies concerning the cosmogonical meanings of the representations. Associate Professor Dr L. Bejenaru also consulted specific publications from the library of UMR 7209.

Between the 18th and 25th of November 2012, Dr Dan Monah, the project manager, travelled to the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology – CNRS-UMR 8215 in Paris, for documentary work as part of the project framework. Several project sub-themes were tackled: For the ‘Religious and artistic ideas in South-eastern Europe and the Middle East’ sub-theme, the project manager met Prof. Dr Jean-Paul Demoule, the author of the Cucuteni and Tripolye entries in the encyclopedia edited by A. Leroi-Gourhan, and author of the volume Naissances de la figure, l’art du paléolithique à l âge du Fer, in which he also analyses a number of discoveries made by us. With respect to the ‘the salt springs — places for salt recrystallization, ritual centres for exchange’ sub-theme, and for the study entitled The importance of salt in ritual exchanges in the South-eastern European Chalcolithic, discussions were held with specialists from a Maison Renè-Ginouvès (UMR 8215), particularly with Dr Olivier Weller and Dr Pierre Petrequin.
